“Alan's choice: Faraday Ridge Shiraz 2004

An Outstanding First-Release Cool Climate Shiraz
Alan’s says: This shiraz comes from a high altitude cool climate vineyard that sits on deep granite soil just outside Bendigo….What makes this wine more interesting are the quality of the grapes. David and Ruth are exceptional grape growers, selling most of their grapes to the iconic wineries of Blackjack, Hanging Rock and Witchmount. With all the success those wineries have enjoyed, they thought they would hold a little bit back to make 120 odd cases of wine for themselves.

Employing Matt Hunter was always going to be a good move as he has picked up many awards around the world for his Langanook wines over the last few years and he has continued his good form for Faraday Ridge which deservingly has two trophies and two gold medals to its name.

Alan's tasting note...
Shiraz has definitely receded down the list of my preferred varietals over the last couple of years but this is without doubt the most impressive wine that I have sniffed and tasted so far this year. This is a great example of cool climate shiraz and a fantastic counter expression to the Barossa style which I find is too often excessively upfront in ripe fruit characteristic. The most outstanding feature of this wine is the dominant aroma of black pepper and complex spices which are again reflected on the wines superbly balanced palate. There is strong concentration and depth of flavour consisting of black fruits and plum which adds layers to the black pepper and spice, which linger on the back palate with tremendous length. “
